Why Maternity is Better

5 reasons why maternity clothing is better

It’s hard to put into words how extraordinary this miraculous journey will be. When you discover you're pregnant you're not only overcome with joy, but with love for this tiny being growing inside you… You truly are full of life! All these new feelings and changes that you're going through in mind and body are to be expected. Wearing your pre-pregnancy clothes now that you're expecting can't be expected though!

We at Thyme Maternity feel privileged to be by your side throughout this journey. Designing products for women at such a special time in their lives truly is our labour of love. Our maternity clothing is specifically tailored to the pregnant woman's body. Our fashions fit perfectly and adapt to your new curves and growing belly, plus offer extra support where you need it. Fabrics are carefully chosen for comfort, durability, stretch and softness.

Your belly will need room to grow... so will your breasts.

The belly can grow by 15 inches (38 cm) to a total of 43 inches (all around at the biggest part) by the end of the pregnancy on a size medium woman. Early in your pregnancy, it will become impossible for you to wear your regular clothing. Not only will they be too tight, they won't provide you with the extra support needed for your belly, back and breasts.

That's right, your breasts will grow too! In fact, they can grow as much as 3 cup sizes during pregnancy. When maternity bras are worn on a regular basis, they can help minimize stretch marks by providing the proper support to breasts.

The average weight gain is 25 to 35 pounds (11.5 to 16 kg) for women of medium size. As you'll soon discover, your belly is not the only area that will grow. Your hips and thighs will become curvier, your breasts will increase in size and fullness and your rib cage will expand as well.

By trimester, the average weight gain is:
1st trimester: 1 – 1 1/2 lbs per month for a total of 3 – 5 lbs
2nd trimester: 1 lb per week for a total of 12 – 14 lbs
3rd trimester: ¾ - 1 lb per week for a total of 10 – 14 lbs

Your sensitive skin needs wearable, pregnancy friendly fabrics.

Like most pregnant woman, you'll experience greater skin sensitivity. In fact, by the time you hear your baby's heart beat for the first time, all your senses will be heightened to a whole new level, starting with "touch."

You’ll need the softest fabrics that can withstand the test of time… and wear! Maternity fabrics are selected to endure frequent wear and washing and still hold their shape, ensuring you look fabulous throughout your entire pregnancy.

And since we all prefer to focus on the important things in life, our maternity fabrics are easy to care for. Garments will hold their figure flattering shape no matter how many times you wash them.

Each woman is different, and so is each trimester

As you go through the different stages of pregnancy, your needs will change. During the first trimester, you may not put on a lot of weight, but your body is adapting nonetheless. Soon you’ll start feeling confined in your regular clothes.

The second trimester has you looking and feeling great. Not only are you glowing, but you’re also starting to look pregnant. During the next few weeks, you can expect to gain about 12 lbs, so it's important to feel comfortable as your body changes.

The third trimester is even more exciting since your little one is just a couple of weeks away. You’ll gain the last 12 lbs or so, and your entire silhouette will get curvier as you prepare to give birth. Make sure you have the proper support for your belly and back, and don’t forget to stock up on cozy loungewear and sleepwear sets.

What is called the fourth trimester (after you’ve delivered baby), is a truly magical time since you now get to meet your little one! During this period, your body needs a little time to adjust. And if you are planning to nurse, ease the process with specially designed tops, bras and nursing accessories.

After delivering baby, your body will need some time to adjust.

After you’ve delivered your little bundle of joy, your body will need some time to get back to its pre-pregnancy silhouette. Most women loose about 10 to 12 pounds during delivery so you’ll feel more comfortable and look your best in clothing tailored to meet your needs. Thyme Maternity has a variety of styles designed for this transition period.
